Student Achievement is in place to display the excellence of the students in our district.  It is a means by which we exhibit how our students demonstrate excellence in their daily academic activities.

 

Kettering Senior Kathleen (Katie) Stark has been named the Best and the Brightest by the Detroit News. Students are selected for the award on the basis of grades, test scores, honors, community involvement, and a demonstrated ability on one of the academic areas. Katie plans on attending Oakland Community College to study Psychology.

 

The Mott High School Hockey Team has qualified for All-State Academic Team with a GPA of 3.11.

 

Pierce Student Council is recognized by the Michigan Education Association (MEA) for their Tsunami relief efforts. Click on the MEA link to find out more.

 

Kettering’s DECA Chapter competed at the District 6 Career Development Conference. Over 662 students competed at Farmington High School representing 22 Oakland County Schools. The students were required to take a Marketing Proficiency test and a occupational test as well present a role-play in their chosen occupational area. The State Career Development Conference will be held March 11-13 in Dearborn. The following students have qualified for state competition: Mindy Vance. Molli Ferrando, Amanda Taylor, Chelsea Mercier, Tara Nicholas, Melanie Delekta, and Michelle Tomczak.

 

The Crary Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society inducted 30 students to the organization. This year's inductees raise the membership total to 46 students. Students are nominated by staff and are recognized for their outstanding character, scholarship, leadership, service and citizenship in the school and community. The chapter is sponsored by teachers Vanessa Marks and Sarah Yates.

 

Waterford Kettering has received the 2004 MHSFCA's All-Academic Team/Honorable Mention (Division 2) status from this past season. The team's overall GPA was 3.30. In addition senior Collin Dederich was selected as MHSFCA's 2004 Individual All-Academic/Special Mention. Collin's overall GPA is currently 3.86!

 

Haviland fifth grade student Veronika Loza has won Honorable Mention in the RIF National Poster Contest! There were 365 posters sent to Washington D.C. from RIF sites all over the United States. Veronika’s poster was chosen as one of 50 that received Honorable Mention! Letters will be sent by RIF to Members of Congress and to Governor Granholm announcing the winners. Veronika will receive a $25.00 book buying certificate and Haviland School will receive a $50.00 book buying certificate. 

 

Student Achievement

 

Kettering National Art Honor Society Students recently painted the windows at Farmer Jack on Dixie Highway for the holiday season. Students involved were Tracy Gabrys, Kristy O'Neill, Brittany Masek, Jessica Herron, Jon Deahl, Mike Condon, Michelle Robinson, Hillary Howell, Tiffany Dion, and Errin Proper. Mott Cross Country Seniors Joey Lopez, Jared Dean, and 10th grade student Lizzy Jones have made the Oakland Activities Association Division II runners. Lizzy is now on the top 10 cross country record board and she has the 7th fastest 5000 meter time in the history of Mott girls cross country.

 

Kettering Senior Justin Switzer became State Champion in Track and just received a scholarship from the University of Michigan!

 

Waterford Village first grade student Cheryl Berney was awarded a $500 prize for the school and a basket of goodies for winning the Farmer Jack "Color the Pumpkin" Contest.

 

Waterford Mott Marching Band finished second place in the Great Lakes Invitational held at Plymouth-Canton High School on Saturday, October 9th, 2004 with a score of 66.80.  The invitational was for Michigan Competing Band Association ensembles and consisted of 22 bands with 6 in Flight I competition along with Waterford Mott.

 

Waterford Mott cheerleaders took top spots at the Student Achievement

Student Achievement2004 Michigan State Fair Cheerleading Competition. Both varsity and junior varsity cheerleading teams took home trophies placing second and first place respectively. The cheerleaders competed on grass instead of cheer mats, keeping with the State Fair fun in the sun casual atmosphere. The cheerleaders are coached by Sheila Lee, Amy Bradley, and Stacey Oliver.

 

The Mott Marching Band competed at the Trenton Invitational and received a II Place award for their performance at this competition. They compete in the Michigan Competitive Band Association as a Flight I group and will perform in three more competitions in October and may have the opportunity to compete in the MCBA State Finals at the Silverdome.

 

Mott students Logan Smith, Laura Proffitt, James Ciennik, and Ilyssa Beltzman were selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Mission in Washington DC. There will be 100 delegates from eleven cities who will participate in team building and orientation exercises designed to provide an overview of the history of the Holocaust and the nature of bigotry and prejudice.

 

Kettering student Justin Switzer competed against 1400 racers and won the Crim 5 K race in Flint. He out-kicked 23 year old J. Bodiriau from Windsor, who finished just one second behind Justin.

 

Samantha Weber, seventh grade student at Crary Middle School, was nominated by the International Society of Poetry Association to receive their Silver Bell Award for her outstanding skills in the Composition of Poetry. Even though Samantha is only 12 years old, she was selected from thousands of entries in the adult division and had her picture was taken with actress Florence Henderson.

 

Music Showcase Festivals has awarded the Kettering Chamber Orchestra its Grand Sweepstakes Award. This award is given to the 2 highest scoring ensemble from all of the festivals the organization hosted during the 2003-2004 school year nationwide.
