Waterford School District to Launch Sweet Reads Bookmobile Summer 2018
Waterford Foundation Provides Funding for this Literacy Project

The Waterford School District will launch its first-ever Sweet Reads Bookmobile, made possible with $14,375 grant funding from the Waterford Foundation for Public Education and the Mary Lou Simmons Legacy Endowment. The Sweet Reads Bookmobile will provide endless opportunities to read this summer and lessen summer reading loss.

Beginning June 18 through August 18, 11:30am-3pm, the Sweet Reads Bookmobile will visit designated neighborhoods surrounding the District’s nine elementary schools and distribute free books to children. During these visits, children may exchange books for new books and purchase ice cream for $1. The Sweet Reads Bookmobile will be staffed by Waterford School District employees and District volunteers. Organizers Houghton Principal Val Grimes and Grayson Principal Lynn Bigelman collaborated on this project to convert an existing Waterford School District utility van into a mobile library to reach and support reading throughout the community.

Children and parents can see the Sweet Reads Bookmobile up close during the Waterford Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28, 10am. Additional information and photos will be updated regularly on the Sweet Reads webpage at www.wsdmi.org/sweetreads.
