Role of the School Board

The School Board consists of seven elected citizens who are responsible to the voters and act under the directions and restrictions of state law. School Board members have no power to act individually in the name of the Board. Action can be taken only when the Board is meeting in formal session with a majority of its members present.

A candidate for the Board of Education must be at least 18 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident of the State of Michigan for at least 30 days; and a resident of the School District on or before the 30th day prior to the date of election. Property ownership is not a requirement for candidacy. Elections are held on the first Tuesday on even years in November. The term of office is six years beginning January 1. Board Members are paid $30 per meeting.

The chief responsibilities of the local Board of Education can be summarized as follows:

• To comply with the laws of the state and regulations of the state educational authority.
• To determine the goals and objectives of public education in the School District.
• To choose the superintendent of schools and work together to make the schools better.
• To contribute to the development and improvement of educational opportunities of all children and youth in the district.
• To develop the policies which will attract and retain competent personnel needed to realize the educational objectives of the district.
• To provide educationally efficient facilities and help obtain the financial resources necessary to achieve educational goals.
• To keep the people of the district intelligently informed about the schools.
• To be sensitive to the educational hopes and aspirations of the people of the district.
• To appraise the activities of the School District in light of the goals and objectives established.
• To discharge its responsibilities as a state agency by participating in statewide efforts to promote and improve public education.

Boards are responsible for assuring educational opportunities to all children and youth in their local community.
