Parents can help prevent alcohol abuse by teens
Mrs. Mary Finkelstein,
M.A.
Mrs. Finkelstein grew up in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan in the small town of Gwinn. She earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary and Special
Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling from
Michigan State University, where she graduated with high
honors while earning both degrees. Prior to teaching in
the Waterford School District, Mrs. Finkelstein taught in
New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts. She has
taught or counseled students in all three Waterford middle
schools since 1988. In her spare time, Mrs. Finkelstein
enjoys playing golf, cooking, spending time with her
family, reading and watching science fiction and watching
Tiger baseball and Spartan basketball.
Mrs. Becky Staab, M.S.,
L.P.C.
Mrs. Staab grew up near Peoria, Illinois. She earned her
Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education from Western
Illinois University. She taught 4th grade in
Pekin, Illinois before moving to Michigan in 1977. She
earned her counseling degree from Illinois State
University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor (L.P.C.).
She joined the staff at Pierce Middle School in 1996 and
earned her Educational Specialist degree from Wayne State
University. She is a current member of the American
Counseling Association, Michigan School Counseling
Association, and the Michigan Education Association.
She sings with the Novi Choralaires and is a member of the
West Point Parents Club of Michigan. She loves to read,
watch MSU football and spend time with her three
children.
Mrs. Tiffany Topie
Mrs. Topie graduated from Oakland University with an
undergraduate degree in Communications and a Master's
degree in Guidance and Counseling. She completed
her intern work at Novi Middle School and worked as an
elementary counselor in Ferndale before joining the
counseling staff at Kettering High School in 2003.
She and her husband, Matt (a teacher at Kettering) have
three children, Clare, Emma and Geno. Mrs. Topie
enjoys traveling, reading, snowboarding and spending
time with her family.
Counseling Announcements:
Every day our students choose to be positive about their
school work, friends and family. We would like to
encourage our students to make new friends in the new
year. Suggestions:

Sit
beside someone different in the lunch room. Say hi
and start a conversation.

When a new student comes into your team, volunteer to
show them around the school.

Join in - Diversity Club, Student Council, PTSA, or ski
club.

Help another student carry a heavy project or clean their
locker for the new year.

Talk to another student about the book you have both read.
-
Wear a smile every day-just like you wear shoes every day.

Ask someone new to study with you for the next test in
your classes.

Have a positive attitude and make a few new friends
everyday!
